Epidermal Langerhans Cells - Gerold Schuler - inbunden

De flesta insjuknar före tio års ålder, men även vuxna kan drabbas. Langerhans cells (LC) are members of the dendritic cells family, residing in the basal and suprabasal layers of the epidermis and in the epithelia of the respiratory, digestive and urogenital tracts. They specialize in antigen presentation and belong to the skin immune system (SIS). 2021-01-25 · A Langerhans cell is a specific kind of white blood cell. Found largely in the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, as well as in lymph nodes, Langerhans cells are an important element of the immune system. They are classified as dendritic cells because they grow projections called dendrites as they develop.

Langerhans cells (LC) are a unique population of tissue-resident macrophages that form a network of cells across the epidermis of the skin, but which have the ability to migrate from the epidermis to draining lymph nodes. Their location at the skin barrier suggests a key role as immune sentinels.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis is an abnormal clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells, abnormal cells deriving from bone marrow and capable of migrating from skin to lymph nodes.

They can be found in the skin, lungs, stomach, bone, eyes and intestines. In LCH, dendritic cells build up, forming tumors Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) is a collection of rare disorders of the mononuclear phagocytes and dendritic cells. Other disorders similar to LCH include Histiocytoses Rosai-Dorfman, juvenile xanthogranuloma, and Erdheim-Chester disease but they do not share the exact phenotypic signature of LCH. Histiocytic sarcoma (G), like Langerhans cell sarcoma (H), demonstrates large pleomorphic atypical cells; however, the cells of histiocytic sarcoma are generally larger than those of Langerhans cell sarcoma and show less nuclear complexity (hematoxylin-eosin, original magnification X400). Our assumptions on the identity and functions of Langerhans cells (LCs) of the epidermis have undergone considerable changes. Once thought to be prototypic representatives of the dendritic cell (DC) lineage, they are now considered to be a specialized subset of tissue-resident macrophages.

Abstract: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is an inflammatory neoplasm of myeloid origin characterized by  Langerhans cells are named after Paul Langerhans, a German physician and anatomist, who discovered the cells at the age of 21 while he was a medical student. Because of their dendrite -like appearance, he mistakenly identified the cells as part of the nervous system .

Although these cells were primarily thought to play a defensive role in the skin, evidence now indicates a diverse range of LC‐mediated effects including the relay of viral antigens in herpes simplex infection, recruitment of eosinophils in atopic dermatitis and promotion of a Th17 response in Candida infection.
